Magazine Product - Magazine Layout - Illustrations Week.

I used a texture paper from google images that I thought would be appealing to the audience. I then went onto thinking about my text. At first I wanted to have a different way of presenting my title so it wasn't like anyone else's. As I was putting in my text and my images, I could see that it would be difficult to place everything together. I decided that this wouldn't work and I wanted to change around and make it much more easier to place everything around.
I then went onto dafonts.com and looked around for an interesting fonts to be more visually eye catching. For my title I chose 'Stripe Fun' and for my text i chose 'Apple Cider Daydreams'.
I downloaded them both and installed them into illustrator. I copied in my analysis that I have previously done to be my text for my layout and started to piece it all together.

I am very happy with my final layout and I think it's clearly laid out and is easy to read. The images have been relevantly put in to the text.

Magazine Project - Initial Ideas x3

Here are my ideas for my advert. I have decided that I wanted to advertise converses. I wanted to advertise the variety of colours which is why I came up with the paint dripping effect. Each drip could be a different colour and give it a young youthful feeling with the use of colour. I want my target audience to be teenagers.

Magazine Project - Indepth Analysis - Andrea Bricco & Henrik Bonnever

Henrick Bonnevier

Andrea Bricco:

From research, it shows that Bricco family have a restaurant, showing the inspiration with food. She grew up in Wisconsin USA.She's been used in many magazines and cook books with advertisment in the food industry.

Alot of her work is around food, playing around the composition to create other objects.

The objects and been designed with a variation of food objects and food illustrations. I think the illustrations are there to clarify what the object is meant to represent. Also with focus of lighting with the shadow coming from above to enhance the image.
When you look at these images it introduces all your sense, touch, smell, taste etc. Therefore, making it all the more exciting. As soon as you see the image it's visually attracting therefore enticing  you to look through more and understand the images more and find out what there about, why she made them and how.
I this work reminds me of Natsko Seki's work in a sense of the way they have both created a scene with images just Bricco had a set theme of food. I like the way also that Bricco has used illustrations, to make it easier to understand the images.

Henrick Bonnevier:
As you can see from the images the artist is in advertisement. He's been in vogue magazine.
He's overall theme is fashion working with bright bold colours to entice people to buy the products.
All his images are landscape. His works intention is make his objects look their best against other objects that compliment each other in order to persuade people to buy. He uses colour boldly to make the final product striking. The overall composition looks randomly designed with shows there was thought behind the design to make the bigger objects more visible. The colours are also limited, using only two colours three maximum. I like this artist work because it's so colourful, it's making it exciting and giving it an uplifting mood. But become too busy and overwhelming. It reminds me of the inside of a shop window. I would like to do work like this in the future.

Indepth Analysis - Georgia Luck, Natsko Seki & Matthew Midgley

example of Natsko Seki

example of Natsko Seki

example of Matthew Midgley

example of Matthew Midgley
example of Georgia Luck

example of Georgia Luck
This week we looked at these three artsits which inspired us todo our own illustrations. Natsko Seki works with paper cutting, watercolours and fine liner to create here random fantasy and quite strange illustrations. So draws out her buildings with fine liner and cuts out her trees, animals and people. I like Seki's work as it has a particular elements of fun injected into it through the use of colour. I also like how it looks random but you can tell that there has been a thought out design therefore it doesn't look too busy and looks incomplete. I would like to use her style of work in the future.

Another artists we looked at was Matthew Medgley. He uses fineliner and watercolour. I like the object he draw images of - ordinary everyday things.  He designs seem simple but well compositioned. i like his use of line and colours.

Lastly, we looked at Georgina Luck illustrations. She a freelance illustrator who lives in Brighton. She studied at Bristol school of Arts graduated 2006.Some of her clinets include; Marks and Spencer, TESCO, Gatwick Airport and Saatchi & Saatchi. I think her works theme relates to advertisement of products through the bright colours.

I like the way she draws the object exactly how she sees them. There are not been exaggerated in any way.She takes detail in her lines and combines them with mark making. as result making the objects lookShe look flowing. It looks as though she uses fine liner, watercolour and ink. She combines these materials with her techniques of sketchy lines to create and cartoon effect.

I think all these artist relate to eachother through the use of lines. i think that they have a similar technique of illistrating their technique. Natsko Seki is different from the other two as she uses paper cutting.

Overall, Georgina Luck was my favourite illustrator to look at as I liked her images. I like the way the ink splatters bled away from the object to make it look quite abstract. I will take these techniques with me to practice lines drawings in the future with still life drawing.

Georgina Luck Inspired Drawings

Georgina Luck example        30 second drawings using fine liner and pencil

30 second drawings using fine liner and colour pencils

30 second drawings using fine liner and colour pencils

1 minute drawing using pencils and ink

1 minutes drawings using water colour and fine liner

5 minute drawing using ink and fine liner
Today's lesson we were looking at Georgina's Luck work. We studied her use of line and colours. We practiced doing quick line drawings trying to use the same technique as her. Overall, I liked looking at Georgina's Luck work as I found it a little abstract and were able to draw quite freely and flowing lines. I would like to do more work like this in the future.

Final Outcome and Evaluation

My Final Outcome T-Shirt Design.

For this project, we had to learned a variety of techniques to then put together our own final t-shirt design and print this for our final outcome, we came up with the ideas by looking at artist like Si Scott, M&M Paris and Natsuki Otani. After looking at these we went on to develop our techniques into our own designs.I realised from the beginning that I preferred the handmade techniques rather than the digital ones as I could control the outcome. throughout my journey on the project I tried to improve my digital skills in order to complete the tasks. Eventually, I was starting to get my head around using the different tools and what there functions were. I like the clean finish the digital experiments were create and was beginning to prefer them more. I then began to think about what sort of final outcome I wanted. I wanted to combine both handmade and digital experiments together.
I think that the watercolour experiment inspired me the most which influenced my final outcome. I like the blending of colours that I was able to do. Her design inspired me to create my own but create a slightly different outcome by changing the material from watercolour to spray paint.
I decided to use a little quote that I recently came across over the internet. 'Don't cry because it ended. Smile because it happened'. I like this quote because I thought it had a positive meaning behind it and encourages us to be optimistic about endings. I tried to use quite bright colours of red, pink and white - I also thought these colours worked particularly well when blended.
I think my design worked out well because I choose a bold text 'Impact' which show my text at it's best. I would hard and quick to cut out my stencil and went straight onto spray painting it. I wanted where the stencil had been to stay white to act as a frame around the text. I thought this particularly worked well. I am very happy with my final outcome because it's exactly how I imagined it to turn out to be.
If I could of improved it I would have used different colour or done samples of different colours to see how they would turn and what worked best as I'm not sure that the colours that I used were the best colours.
Overall, I liked this project as I got a chance to learn different experiment around typography which has been something i have been interested in since last year. It also a subject I would like to corporate in the Photography work. Now I have learnt these technique I could incorporate these technique in future work.

Development Of Ideas - 3 Initial Ideas

done by hand, this is the idea I would like to use for my final outcome,
creating a stencil, cut it out and use the spray paint to blend and create the
water colour effect.

This is my Si Scott inspired idea, using a black t-shirt.
I would heat transfer this design on.

This is my other design where I also wanted to use the watercolour
idea but directly with the paint onto the t-shirt. I later realise this wouldn't be the best way.

Bleaching & Heat Transfer Method

Bleaching

Heat Transfer
Today we tested two method of small sample of t-shirt fabric. The first one was bleaching;

To get the bleached effect you first have to create a stencil, you print whatever design you want on t-shirt and print it onto card. When you have done that you then cut out your design. You then prepare you bleach. Make sure you tape down you're design onto your t-shirt so it doesn't move and you're painting you're bleach on. You then start dabbing you're bleach on as you don't want to just paint it on and the bleach make leak through and you want. Once you have gone over you're design a couple times to make sure the design is covered you leave to dry.
My bleaching effect didn't work very well and the bleach didn't take very well to the t-shirt. Maybe because I needed stronger bleach. I really enjoyed this using this effect but if I was to use this technique I would get the strongest type of bleach I could get to try ensure the bleach would come through.

The second technique was heat transfer;
First you turn on the heat transfer as it need around ten minutes to heat up.Whilst this is heating you need to get your design onto heat transfer paper. We had the teacher helping us with this. Once this is done you peel your design off the paper, place it onto the now heated heater onto of your t-shirt, heat proof paper again over this, you then shut down the heat transfer for 20 seconds and then lift and you're design is now you're t-shirt.
I liked this design as I got a better result then I did with the bleach. One thing I would fault with this technique is printing your design onto the heat transfer paper you can loose essential detail and doesn't print as good as you may see it on the computer. If we use this technique for my final outcome I would spend more time printing my design on a better printer.

Review And Refine Experiments.

During the project we have experimented with a variety of materials such as acrylic paints, water colour, colouring pencils, different types of food, objects and paper. By using these materials we praticed techniques like water colour based typography, calligrams, manipulating text of photoshop and illustrator, paper cutting out text.
I looked at many artist work, imitated their work, my favourite were Hennie Haworth as I like her handmade technique. I have analysed Oscar Wilsons work.
I wanted to make the saying I use relevant and linked to the material I use to create the type. I collected these saying from song lyrics and phrasing that I have learnt over a period of time.
After I have posted onto the blog I always annotate how I created it and who inspired me. This helps me to confirm the procedure and the new knowledge that I have just learnt.
I like all of the hand made typography techniques as it allowed be to be creative and in control with my final outcome, in the future I would concentrate more on digital technique, to improve them but to also allow myself to knowledge with the final outcome.
I found the digital typography techniques were difficult as you had to understand all the technique steps and you can easily get stuck. I need to keep practicing my techniques.
I will be developing handmade cutting stencils to produce a printed t-shirt.
I could research extra artists to review their technique to inspire me to create my own.

Si Scott - Typography using Illustrator

examples of Si Scott's work

examples of Si Scott's work
My Own Work

This work was inspired by an artist called Si Scott  who using Illustrator to create text. he specifically uses the warp and twirl tool to create this effect.  I really like Si Scott's work because he make the lettering look much more interesting to look at. When I look at his work it makes me think of advertising for magazines, as this is the type of work I work expect to see.  I decided to create one of my own in illustrator. I then typed out my text and then used to warp and twirl tool to make my text look more like Si Scott's I really liked using this effect as I think it work really well for a t-shirt design. It also is very expressive and can come up with some very interesting design. I am interested in using this for my final design and if doing this in the future I would spend time really concentrating, maybe making the text smaller and having much of a complex design with the lines.

Typography experiments: Digital vs. Handmade

example of debbie smyth's work

Handmade.

Debbie Smyth work has been created by hand with pins and thread of different colours and then been photographed in Photoshop.I really like Smyth's work as it has a sense of movements and flowing with the lines
Inspired by the work of Debbie Smyth using material such as pins, wool and foam board. First of all you made out your letter with your pins, after that you the went around you're pins however you wanted to and made a design. I particularly liked this effect as you could be free with it and build upon the layers of wool continuously going over and over.

I preferred doing this handmade technique as you have more control over the end result. To improve each piece i could experiment with different colours and create more letters, even a word or a phrase.

AS Graphics - In Depth Analysis - Oscar Wilson

Oscar Wilson is an artist specialized in image creation and hand craft typography. He was founded in 1996 opening a gallery in London. He an contemporary artist currently working now on London tourist campaign on London advertisement. His Clients include Nike, Puma, Visit London and Orange. The theme around his work was London, you can visit his website www.studiooscar.com. He specializing in typography, constructing to be visually attractive to make advertising work and entice people to come to London.

The artist looks like he uses Illustrator and Photoshop by using bold and warp effects and adjusting the font sizes and the layout. He uses a limited pallet, to make sure that there not too busy. Only using 3-4 colours maximum. The colours that he used were also quite relative to object that that he was creating. I think that this was put into place to reinforce what the object was and not making the idea too complicated. I would associate this type of work with advertisement, as we know that the artist does and worked for major clients. The composition is shape in the objects, the use of text and playing around with the scales to fit, into the objects making it very clear what they are.

When I first looked at this work I really liked it because I like the uniqueness of it. I had never seen somebody else do it. I was also interested in how it was created and how he thought of doing this way. I like by using to basic colour it doesn't make this too complicated and sometimes less is more.It evoked my visual senses as I wanted to read what the letters said and what they meant to the work. I really liked looking at Oscar Wilson's work.

Typography experiments: part 3

example of Ruscha's work.

These examples were inspired by an artist called  Ed Ruscha creating typography. The artist looks like he then goes and digitally enhances the images on photoshop. I then decided to have a go myself using food materials such as salt, sugar, spaghetti, beans, ketchup and pasta. I found it really easy working with the material like ketchup and salt, and it is easy to get it in the exact place you want it, other material like pasta, as it is hard, it is a bit more difficult to create the exact you may have wanted for instance, small floaty text, in the end, we chose quite a standard font to use. Whilst thinking about the text we always made sure that our typography always related back to our material such as using ketchup, we wrote out the word splat!

I really enjoyed working this way as I have always preferred handmade as you have more more control on the outcome. To go back and develop this further I would take this original images and then edit them into Photoshop to give a more sleek effect looking much more like Ed Ruscha's work.
